Conversion to Judaism involves more than adopting a new religion. Becoming Jewish is about joining the People of Israel: an ancient people with shared history, vision, values, and beliefs.
The most important requirement of conversion is the sincere acceptance and observance of the mitzvos, the divine commandments, given by G-d in his Holy Torah. Acceptance of these mitzvos requires a total lifestyle change. Because this is weighty decision, it cannot be undertaken without a period of studying and living the mitzvos.
The typical course of conversion takes between 18 and 24 months to complete. During this time, the candidate for conversion must live in the Jewish community, complete a curriculum of study, and demonstrate a sincere willingness to adopt Orthodox Jewish practice and beliefs as a way of life.
