The following are the current (Summer 2022) Conversion Policies and Protocols for the Dallas Beis Din. Please note that these Policies and Protocols are subject to revision as necessary:
- Potential candidates must submit a written application to the Dallas Beis Din along with two passport-sized photo and an application fee of $200.00. You may request an application HERE.
- All potential candidates must consent to a full criminal background check.
- All information provided to the Dallas Beis Din or uncovered in the application process will be kept in the strictest of confidence and used only for the purpose of evaluating the candidate for conversion.
- Potential candidates must reside within an eruv – a region designated as within the Jewish community. The DFW community currently has 5 eruvs: South-of-Forest, North Dallas, Far North Dallas, Plano, and Richardson. Candidates who do not live within one of these five eruvs must relocate before being accepted into the conversion program.
- Once accepted into the geirus (conversion) program, the candidate must find a sponsoring rabbi. A sponsoring rabbi is a congregational Orthodox rabbi within one of the eruvs who agrees to serve as a guide and mentor to the candidate. The sponsoring rabbi will also provide information to the Dallas Beis Din as to the candidate progress.
- Candidates are required to complete a course of study covering the basics of Jewish beliefs and practice. The course is approximately 65 classes taught over an 18 to 24 month period. Candidates are expected to study and review the material presented in the courses. Occasional evaluations and examinations will be administered to asses the candidate’s progress.
- Any member of the Dallas Beis Din, sponsoring rabbi, or community congregational rabbi may anonymously request that a candidate for conversion undergo a psychiatric or psychological evaluation as a prerequisite for conversion.
- A final payment of $1,300.00 will be due upon completion of the conversion program and finalization of a candidate’s conversion.
- The Dallas Beis Din may deny conversion to any candidate at any stage in the conversion program.
Conversion to Judaism is much more than just adopting a new religion. It involves a complete transformation of your identity and lifestyle. There are many complicated factors that go into the Jewish community’s decision to accept a prospective convert. The Beis Din’s main concern, however, is whether your conversion is a healthy decision for you at this stage of your life.
